Competition Rules

Before we dive into the depths of competition, let’s familiarise ourselves with the rules that will govern our angling adventure.

Updated 27/5/2021

General Rules

These guidelines are designed to ensure fair play, uphold sportsmanship, and maximise the enjoyment for all participants. From comp times to catch measurement, every aspect is carefully considered to level the playing field and celebrate the true spirit of angling prowess. So, anglers, as you prepare to embark on this thrilling journey, let these rules be your compass, guiding you towards victory while honouring the noble tradition of fishing excellence. Tight lines and good luck to all!

  1. Captain to monitor competition times.
  2. Only members who are paid up are allowed to compete, but guests are welcome along for a fish.
  3. As a safety precaution all members taking part in comps must let the captain know at least two days prior to the comp.
  4. A minimum of four members must be present for the monthly comp to be official.
  5. Trophies are awarded for the Biggest:
    • Snapper
    • Salmon
    • Bream
    • Whiting
    • Gummy
    • Flathead
  6. The finish time that is set will mean be at the weigh in point, this only applies to the monthly championship comp.
  7. If members are more than fifteen minutes late to a weigh in, they will be disqualified from the competition on that given day.
  8. In a surf competition only one rod may be permitted in the water by a member at any given time during a comp.
  9. Boat comps: members can use as many rods as allowed by V.R. fish; this includes land based fishos.
  10. The size limit for squid has been updated to a hood only size of 21 cm.
  11. All permitted species under twenty-eight centimetres will be upgraded to Twenty-eight centimetres (in other words no fish under 28cm).
  12. The club’s legal size for flat head is 30cm.
  13. The largest species which will be monitored by the online app will be measured by Fork length using a Dangler’s brag mat.
  14. All members unless exempted by V.R. Fish must have a current fishing licence.
  15. With regards to species specific comps, if you catch a different species it will not be included in your bag weight for that comp, however it will be
weighed / measured for one of the largest fish trophies. For example, if on a snapper comp you catch a big salmon, the salmon will not be included in your bag weight but will be recorded so it can be included for the largest salmon trophy.

Changing competition dates and venue

Land based competitions

  1. Land based comps will not be postponed due to weather forecast.
  2. If the weather is poor and you still want to fish, then as long as there are four or more members then the comp will be official ( all members must fish and not just turn up) If less than four members turn up then the comp is not official.

Boat competitions

  1. The day and venue will be weather dependent and subject to change.
  2. The trigger to consider change will be a BOM forecast of above 15 knots for the location to be fished.
  3. The Captain and Vice-Captain will determine any change in the following order.
  4. If Western Port Bay wind forecast is much more suitable than PPB forecast, then the venue will change to WPB and vice versa. (the priority will be to keep the date) If not, then.
  5. If the weather forecast is predicted to change for the worse on the Sunday and the Saturday forecast is good, then the comp will be moved to Saturday.
If not, then.
  6. If the weather does not allow the comp to go ahead on the rostered weekend, then it will be cancelled.
  7. The captain will keep all members updated as timely as practical.
